  2. Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac is a novel about the Navajo Marines of World War 2. This book is an interesting story because many of us don’t even know that there were Navajo-Indian Marines fighting for the United States in World War 2. I was one of those people before I read this interesting novel written by an author of American-Indian heritage. Navajos played a crucial part in the war because they became “Code Talkers”. This means that they used their native language (Navajo) to send secret messages to aid the conflict with Japan. The main character’s name is Ned Begay and he goes through experiences that are both funny and horrifying. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys war journey stories or the Historical Fiction genre.
    Enjoy!

I greatly enjoyed reading the book,"Compound." It was fast paced book that threw surprises at me every chapter. The genre is a mix of mystery and science fiction because of a nuclear explosion and secrets that came along with it. While reading this book, I had many predictions and thoughts which made this novel even more interesting to experience. I also liked the style that the author wrote in which was simple, but still engaging. The plot setup was also appealing because it was exciting to read from only the first chapter. Overall I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to anyone.

I really loved reading the book The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I was particularly interested in reading this book because it was recently made into a motion picture starring one of my favorite actresses Emma Stone as one of the main characters. Also a theater counselor from my sleep away camp stars as a husband of a character in the film. I instantly became hooked as soon as I started this book. The incredible imagery and the style of alternating perspective views from the the three main characters was amazing. It really made you feel like you were living along side them in the 1060's experiencing all the trouble and heartbreak the African American housekeepers lived through during the civil rights movement. I overall really enjoyed this book would recommend it to anyone my age and above, teens and adults alike. I will definitely continue to read The Help over and over again.

I loved reading the book "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban". There where surprises hidden around every corner, and it was cleverly written. The genre is fantasy, as it is about wizards. I was always making predictions as to what would happen next, and sometimes they where wrong, which made the book ever more exciting. The plot kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book, and problems where solved in ways I never would've imagined. All in all I really enjoyed this book.

I just finished my book "Deep and Dark and Dangerous". The genre was mystery. It was a very intense, suspenseful book with twists that you would never expect. It was a ghost story. The author, Mary Downings Hahn, did a great job at writing this book because it kept me wanting to read more. The tone was mysterious and sometimes scary. It was a very interesting novel and very different from other books I have read. The plot was constantly making you want to read more and it was very engaging. In conclusion, I really liked this book and I would recommend it to anybody that enjoys mystery.

i recently read the book, "39 clues, the Black Circle." it was a great book, at the end there was a cliffhanger. the book was very well written by patrick carman. Erica from period 4, your book sounds great. You made it sound as if you’d never read anything like it. Compound sounds like an exhilarating story and I will be sure to put it on my high priority reading list. I have been searching for a book like this one so I can enjoy my independent reading. Thank you very much for introducing this book to me I look forward to reading Compound.

The book that I read was "The Back Door of Midnight" by Elizabeth Chandler. I enjoyed this book very much and I especially enjoyed the author's style of writing. The book was fast paced and exciting with surprises when you would least expect it. It was suspenseful and made me want to keep reading more and more. The way the author portrayed the genre of mystery was very enjoyable and interesting. Overall this book is now one of my favorites and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a book that you won't be able to put down.

I had a fun time reading, “Elsewhere” by Gabrielle Zevin. It had a strange concept of death that got me really interested. Many people have different theories of what might happen when you die. You could go to heaven, go ‘under there’, become a ghost, be reborn as something else or simply just lay in the ground for eternity. Everyone wants to know what happens next. But in this book, when Elizabeth Marie Hall (or Liz) dies, she is taken to a place called ‘Elsewhere’. And in Elsewhere, it seems just like Earth. The only thing is… everyone is aging backwards. Throughout the book, Liz goes through a lot of grief and pain. The author used powerful words that could even make me feel the emotions she felt. But when she finally gets sick and tired of being depressed, she really opens her eyes and sees how Elsewhere is an exiting place. She meets new people, accomplishes things that she was never able to do on Earth and runs into crazy adventures that sometimes got her in great trouble. This book kept reading and reading. I couldn’t help but guess what was going to happen next. This was a fun fantasy book, so I would recommend this for anyone who loves adventuring into a new land. This is a book that I will read over and over in the future.

I really enjoyed reading the novel “The Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd. This is a fictional story. It was very adventurous. At some points, I couldn’t put the book down! The main character, Lily, lives her life off of a miserable childhood memory involving her mother. Lily and her “stand-in-mother”, Rosaleen, encounter many different aspects of her life such as dealing with her abusive father, learning how to get honey from a beehive, and cruelty of racial segregation. The novel takes place in the South during the year of 1964. During this period of time, tensions were high between colored and white people. She was colored, but Lily wasn’t. I would highly recommend it especially to any teenage girl.

In my book “The Last Olympian” by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson, a well-known demigod son of Poseidon, god of the sea, faces his toughest battle yet. Luke, his nemesis and son of Hermes, is back and stronger than ever. Not only is Luke not in his regular state but also Kronos the titan king has taken over his body and is fighting to take Olympus and destroy the gods. The reason kronos is so furious and merciless is because he was defeated thousands of years ago and thrown down in the pits of Tartarus. Kronos, other titans, and many monsters including the worst of the monster typhon are back. Not only do monsters want to take down Olympus but there are also demigods on their side. But with the help of many gods, they might be able to pull through. Not only is this book filled with action, but it has some sad parts, which occur when you feel there is no hope for Olympus. However there are also cheerful parts where there is hope. In past books, Percy shows his strength and cunning while fighting monsters and figuring out problems but this might be too much for him. All in all this book was a fantastic thriller with tremendous twists and turns mixed in with the action you only get in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. This book and series is a must read to anyone. I guarantee you will get hooked.

The book Miss. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children was an excellent adventure/mystery book. The book was filled with suspense that made me never want to put it down! The book took me through many exiting adventures as Jacob uncovered the mysteries of his grandfather’s strange childhood and tragic death. On this journey Jacob meets some peculiar children all with special talents, later in the book he finds out he is one of them! This book also has a bit of a dark and scary part to it with Jacob’s encounters with monsters known as hollows and wights. Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children is a great book that will keep you hooked, and begging for a sequel!

You are entirely right, Peter. This series will hook you by the time you finish the first few paragraphs. The Percy Jackson Series includes the perfect mix of fantasy and real life, and it truly makes you believe that this happens in real life. I started reading these books in fourth grade, and when the fifth book, The Last Olympian, came out, I went directly to the bookstore, bought a copy, and started reading it. It was, and still is, a great fantasy novel by a great author. I only suggest that anyone reading your review should start from the first book, The Lightning Thief, or else most of this book will not make sense to the reader.

The book that I decided to read for the independent reading project was The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson. I found this book to be extremely interesting; it kept me reading on every time a chapter ended. The genre of the book is fiction and mystery. I usually don’t read mystery books but this book has influenced me to try and read different genres because I might end up liking them. This book was about a seventeen year old girl named Jenna Fox, who was in a horrible accident. Jenna originally wasn’t supposed to survive the accident because her injuries were so terrible…but she did. When Jenna wakes up from her coma she has a hard time remembering her past. Jenna begins to wonder what happened before the accident. Jenna is afraid that she won’t like what she hears if she finally asks her parents what happened during the accident. Jenna wants to know what happened to her old self and who she really is. I really enjoyed reading this book; I would recommend it to anyone. I wish there were a movie out based on the book. That would be exciting. I know that there are some other books out by this same author. Maybe I will try reading some of her other writing. I hope if you try reading this wonderful book that you will like it as much as I did!

"The Help" by Kathryn Stockett was an amazing book. It was very enjoyable and hard to put down. This incredible book was written to show the life of African-American maids and the hardships they faced during the 1960s. The figurative language and detailed descriptions of the characters in this book made it seem as if the events are taking place right before your eyes. This book took place in Jackson, Mississippi and the author made that very clear by using dialogue that represented the area nicely. In the story, Euginia "Skeeter" Phelan, a southern society girl, returns home from college with the hope of becoming a writer. When she arrives in Jackson, things are different and her housekeeper, who raised her as she grew up had apparently quit. After hearing this news, Skeeter was devastated. One of Skeeter's best friends has a housekeeper named Abileen and throughout the story the two characters become more and more fond of each other. Abileen, Skeeter, and many others succeed in a "project" that could have possibly ended their lives! However, because of this "project" the town of Jackson Mississippi is never again the way it used to be. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone! It is out standing and very hard to put down. Once you start reading it will definitely be difficult to stop!

The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin is a complex, detailed explanation of Benjamin Franklin’s life. Author Gordon S. Wood (a professor of history at Brown University) really does a magnificent job, explaining such a complicated person and his many achievements. Benjamin Franklin was born very poor and worked his way to be a wealthy and witty individual. He was a successful, printer, inventor, business man, and politician. Franklin really represents what America stands for, a self-made man who worked his way to the top, and Gordon S. Wood does a good job of explaining that connection. Wood also does a spectacular job at explaining Franklin’s sways in opinions as well. Wood not only focuses on his life, but also focuses on Franklin’s different reputation before and after his death. Out of most books regarding Franklin’s life, the Americanization of Benjamin Franklin is one of the more insightful and in depth books. In my opinion, this is a must read for anybody interested in Benjamin Franklin’s life.

I really liked what you said about the Prisoner Of Azkaban from the Harry Potter Series. It is so true that this book has surprises around every corner. I have read all of the Harry Potter books and enjoyed them all to the last page. This one, however, was one of my favorites because of all the suspense. The movie is also excellent as well. My favorite part of the series is that in all the books, particularly this one because of the numerous settings, is that the whole world of Harry Potter was developed by the author J.K Rowling writing down a simple plot and character traits on a napkin in a restaurant. Rick Riordan has brought us another book fit for the Gods. His last book of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Last Olympian, has not disappointed. In my opinion it is the best of all five. It is a magnificent tale of the struggle between Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon (the God of the Sea) and his arch nemesis, Luke Castellan, son of Hermes (God of Travelers and messenger of the Gods). In this epic novel Kronos has risen from the depths of Tartarus and taken control of Luke’s body. He leads his army of monsters, including dracanae and hell hounds, into Manhattan to destroy the center of the Gods’ power, Mount Olympus. Kronos has unleashed the greatest threat to the Gods, the Typhon. While the Gods are in the west fighting the Typhon, all that’s left to guard Olympus is Percy and the half bloods. This leads to the awesome and thrilling battle in the streets of Manhattan. Will they defend Olympus and save the Gods? You’ll just have to read it yourself. This book will make your heart skip a beat. Its tragedies will lead to tears. This novel is full of unexpected occurrences. It has a fantastic balance of adventure, action, and thrill. There’s no way to tell what’s coming. This book will have you hooked in the first few pages. This is definitely a page turner. I picked up the novel and started reading, before I knew it, 3 hours had gone by in what felt like a couple of minutes. The Last Olympian is up there in the top 10 books I have read in my life. I am absolutely going to read other books by Rick Riordan. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone even if they aren’t into Greek Mythology or adventure. After they read this book, they’ll be begging for more.

The book I choose to read for the Independent Reading Project is the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The Hunger Games was an extremely intense story that kept me hooked for hours. When I first opened the book, I could not stop reading! The genre of the book is science fiction, because it is written as if it was the future of North America. However, it could also be defined as a love story, as well. According to the book, there are 12 Districts and one large Capitol. When the twelve districts rebelled in the past, the Capitol made up the annual hunger games to prove they are still the ones in power. During the Hunger Games, one boy and one girl is chosen from each of the twelve Districts. All twenty- four tributes are placed in an arena and are forced to fight until only one stands. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who loves to read an excellent action/ adventure story. I assure you that you will love it!

My book, "The Berlin Boxing Club" by Robert Sharenow was a heartbreaking and fast paced novel set in the early years of Nazi-Germany (1934-1938). In the novel the main character, Karl Stern, faces hatred and loathing because of a religion that he didn't even consider himself being. Karl is 14 and technically Jewish, although he wasn't raised that way. He has never stepped foot into a synagogue and his father chose to raise him and his sister as atheists. Although there had been people treating Jewish men and women inhumanely before Karl was never directly effected by it and just cast it out of his mind but then, while he is alone in his school, a group of boys punches, kicks and throws him down a flight of stairs. That day is life changed forever, for better and for worse. The big change was his new boxing teacher, world famous boxer Max Schmeling. When his training commences his boxing career takes off and things seem to be fine but Anti- Semitic feelings start to bloom and things for his family hit a downward spiral. Soon, Karl's relief from the horrors of leading a Jewish life in Nazi Germany crumbles and Karl is left feeling empty and depressed. His world is falling apart and at the height of the insanity Kristallnacht occurs tearing apart his family and injuring his father. In the end of the novel Karl and his sister get sent to Amerika by their mother and go to live with their cousins. Through it all Karl and his family stay sane except in the heartbreaking end when they are only fighting to stay alive. Sharenow does such an amazing job at painting pictures in you mind. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a historical-fictional novel.

"Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoevsky is truly a phenomenal masterpiece. At first, being truly skeptical of the book, it indeed turned out to be quite interesting, of course for good reason. Dostoevsky’s novel takes place in St. Petersburg, Russian Empire, in the 1860's, and follows the story of the intellectual Rodion Raskolnikov, a former student turned murderer. Throughout the novel, Dostoevsky breathtakingly reveals the delusional criminal mind of Rodion Raskolnikov, which is conflicted with not only vicious evil, but also sympathetic generosity as well. Driven insane about the murders he committed, Raskolnikov confesses to the police, which in turn lands him an eight year work sentence in Siberia. "Crime and Punishment" is a powerful must read for those who are interested in the criminal mind, psychology, and moral reasoning.

It was a beautiful and dark story of love and death. The characters were fascinating and came to life on the pages of the novel, you could almost hear them singing the well know songs countless numbers of people have fallen in love with. The book, "Jaws" by Peter Benchley, is about the town of Amity, Long Island. It was a peaceful and quiet town. Until, their waters became tainted with a killer Great White Shark. A women was found dead on the shoreline, and that is when officer Martin Brody considered they should close the beaches. After disputing with mayor Larry Vaughn told him he doesn’t have permission, because the town of Amity needs their summer income. As a result two more people died the next day (a six year old boy and a 65 year old man). That's when they finally decided to close the beaches. After one of Brody's friends had died from an attack, they then felt it was urgent to catch the shark (considering how many people were becoming injured). Officer Brody, Matthew Hooper (who specializes in oceanology ), and Sam Quint (A fisherman) all help to hunt down the Great White Shark. Overall, I did really enjoy this book. The plot kept me reading from page to page and I could not put it down! I would definitely recommend this book to everyone I know.

The novel Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult is by far one the best book I have ever
read. It is an interesting story of a bully victim that gets pushed over the edge with the
swirlies, teasing, and taunting. The story is told in a series of flashbacks through the
main characters’ eyes. It takes place in the town of Sterling, New Hampshire, where
nothing ever happens and the crime rate is basically zero until one day when the
“popular kids” at Sterling High push Peter Houghton over the edge. The worst part is
that one of the main offenders is Peter’s ex-best friend, Josie Cormier. Peter gets bullied
so much that one day it just becomes too much for him to handle, and he becomes a
school shooter. Peter shoots children just for getting in his way, for not doing what he
says. When Peter is put in jail, the judge on the case is no other than Josie’s mother,
Alex Cormier. Can Judge Cormier be impartial on this case? Will Peter be in a prison cell
for the rest of his life? I would recommend this book to anyone thirteen years or older

I also have read the book Deep and Dark and Dangerous. I too enjoyed it very much and found it very interesting. It was full of suspense and action. If you like the author of the book, she also writes more ghost stories like "Wait 'Till Helen Comes", "The Doll in the Garden", and "The Old Willis Place". These are all great stories that are just like Deep and Dark and Dangerous

Little Women and Werewolves, By Lousia May Alcott. I felt the book was rather interesting, and full of twists and turns around every corner. Considering that I have many cousins (who are like sister to me) I was able to connect with the characters. The writing ways and vocabulary was old-fashioned, but yet sophisticated. The book’s morals and theme gave me many life lessons to ponder on, such as how to face the hardships life throws at you, like loss and heartache. Monetary value versus emotional value was a large lesson to be learned by the March sisters. For example, when Amy married Laurie for love and not his money. I highly recommend the book, for it gave me strength and ways to solve any problem life throws at me!

Miss. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children seems like a great book! I happen to love mysteries and suspenseful books! It seems like a really interesting book, one that many people would enjoy! Also, your review was articulate and truthful, which shows signs of not only a great book, but a great writer as well! I hope that one day I can find that book and read it myself!

I read "Get Well Soon" by Julia Halpern. It was very enjoyable and entertaining. This book takes place in a Mental Hospital, but it doesn't have a very serious feeling like i thought it would. It is extremely light-hearted and fun to read. The books main character, Anna, has all these idiotic opinions that are amusing. As much as a fantastic book this is, I would not recommend this book to boys because I do not see them to be able to relate to this book.

Across the Universe by Beth Revis is a fantastic book. It is about a 17 year old girl named Amy, who has been cryogenically frozen aboard a spaceship called Godspeed. She and her parents, who were also frozen, are told that they will wake up on a new planet 300 years into the future. But 250 years into Godspeed’s voyage, May is violently woken from her deep frozen slumber. She thinks that someone has woken her in order to kill her, and she is determined to find out whom. But while she tries to accept her new life on Godspeed, things seem too strange too be true. Everyone is overly calm and respectful to their dictator Eldest and his teenage heir Eldest is more interested in Amy than the strings of lies tying up everyone abroad Godspeed. Across the Universe is a sort of long book (about 400 pg.), but I really loved it. If you read it, you will notice how it never gets boring and you always want to read on!

I read the Harry Potter series a few years agoand I really enjoyed it. I was hooked from the first chapter in the first book, and I read all seven books in a little less than a year! You wrote a really great review. I completely understand what you mean when you said you were on the edge of your seat while reading it!

I really enjoyed my book, Sent by Margaret peterson Haddix. Going into reading I thought it would be boring because it takes place in the 15th century. However, once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. i read the first book in the series and now cant wait to read the next two, Sabotaged, and Torn. I have really enjoyed the series so far and I don't think I will be let down with the rest of it.

I read the book code talker in fifth grade in a reading group and I loved it. In fact I liked it so much I read it again. I like how it is a true event with the navajo language code, but was still a fiction story so it could make it's own dramatic story line. I really enjoyed the book and clearly you did too.

I chose Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Myers. This book is about a vampire named Edward Cullen, who falls in love with and average girl named Bella Swan. They have been dating for a year and they want to take their relationship to the next level. Eventually, Edward and Bella get married. They go on their honeymoon to a secret island in Brazil, owned by the Cullen family. Suddenly, Bella notices that she is pregnant. Then, nine months later she is passed out by the half vampire baby who is sucking the blood out of her body. Finally, Edward changes her into a vampire right before she took her last breath. Bella is finally a vampire and survives the labor. I recommend Breaking Dawn to anyone who likes these kinds of books. It was a great book with a very intense ending. I loved it <3

I read "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. In this book, 2 tributes from each of the 12 districts go and fight to the death in and event known as The Hunger Games. Katniss, the main character, volunteers to take the place of her sister Primrose who was selected in the draft. The other tribute from her district is a baker boy named Peeta. Peeta once gave Katniss food when her family was starving. Throughout the book, Peeta admits to loving Katniss and the games prove intense on their relationship. I greatly enjoyed this book and would definately recommend it to anyone.

The book I chose was called White Crow, by Marcus Sedgwick. It takes place in Winterfold, a small coastal town that is slowly being consumed by the sea. There are two separate- yet connected- timelines: modern day and the 18th century. The story begins when Rebecca, one of the main characters, moves to Winterfold for the summer. She meets Ferelith, a mysterious loner who quickly becomes her good friend. Meanwhile, back in the year 1798, Rector, a clergyman, meets Dr. Barrieux, a doctor from France. Rebecca and Ferelith do all sorts of things that summer- stealing, trespassing, sneaking around the graveyard, and doing dares. But eventually, they come to the same question Rector and Dr. Barrieux tried to answer: is there life after death? To say the least, the secrets they uncover are better left undisturbed. The story is told from three perspectives: Rebecca's, Ferelith's, and Rector's. This book is a frightening and incredibly thrilling read, and I highly recommend it.

The book i chose to read for this assignment wasThrough My Eyes, by Tim Tebow, co-authored with Nathan Whitaker. This book is about Tebows life from his near failed birth, through his childhood, into college, and finally the NFL. He explains how while his mother was pregnant with him, the doctor said that the only way for her to survive is to have an abortion. Both of his parents were Christian Missionaries, so of course they wouldnt go through with the abortion. They had Tim and he was a healthy baby. His mother also survived the pregnancy. Good thing they didnt listen to the doctor. He then explains growing up in the Philippines, then later Florida, as well as his sports, homeschooling, and church activities. Then he was faced with a difficult decision on which college to go to, Big two, Alabama and Florida. With lots of prayer Godled him to Florida. At UF, in his career, he won 2 national championships, was a 3-time 1st team all-american, a heisman trophy winner, and the first person to appear as a finalist in three heismans, and win the heisman as a sophomore. He is then drafted by the Denver Bronco's, and starts his NFL career.

I have never read the Hunger Games but everyone says it is one of the best books they have ever read. I received it as a gift and have yet to read it. It sounds like a great book and clearly since more than half of all people did their IRP on it, it must be good. I will make sure that it is the next book i read and will start very soon!

The book I chose was called All-American Girl, by Meg Cabot. It takes place in Washington D.C. In this book, a girl names Samantha Madison saves the life of the president.Samantha was always a rebel. She thought she was in love with her sister’s boyfriend, Jack. The number one reason why is because she skipped her art class one time. During this time, she saved the president from being assassinated. Ever since then, her life has never been the same. She went from having everyone give her dirty looks, to everyone wanting to be her friend. When she meets the president, she instantly has a “frisson” with his son, David. Throughout the novel, she is trying to figure out weather or not she is in love with Jack, or David. I think the novel was very fun to read. It had a very amusing atmosphere to it. It was one of those books that you can’t put down until it’s finished! I would highly recommend it to any teenage girl.

I greatly enjoyed reading the book The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The second I started this book, it was impossible to put down. It is informational about the 1960s and really gets you to understand the perspective of the maids during the ‘60s. I chose this book because I know others who have read it and enjoyed it just as much. I would definitely recommend this book.

I read the Big Field by: Mike Lupica. At first I only started reading this book because it was the only one that was on my bookcase. After the first chapter or two I was already sucked in. Though this book mostly consists of baseball I really enjoyed it. Mike Lupica did a great job creating the sense of mood an grabbing the reader which he does in all of his books. I highly recommend this book to any reader and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

I read Peeled, by Joan Bauer. This book is about a 16 year-old high school journalist named Hildy Biddle. Hildy lives in Banesville, New York, a town with many apple orchards, where everything is about the harvest. Hildy is inspired by her father, who was also a opinionated journalist before he died of a heart attack. But when a man in killed by an old abandoned house, people start getting worried. To make matters worse, spooky signs keep appearing on the house’s door and a nasty reporter who is always exaggerating the truth runs the only newspaper in town to cover the story. Even though Hildy and her friends who write The Core, the high school newspaper, are only kids, they know they must tand up against the lies being told to their neighbors. I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone.
